What is Patient Safety?

Have you heard others say to you that the numbers of falls that occur in hospitals each year are staggering? Be sure you make a plan to stay with your loved one if you think they are a fall risk and be sure you tell the hospital staff.
Patient safety is a priority of healthcare organizations to keep their patients safe. To protect their patients from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.

What are Hospital grades?

“Grades” are something we’re all familiar with right? Grades have been assigned from the time school was started through to our career choices.  One area that you may not be familiar with is the grading of hospitals.

Yes, even hospitals sure are held to a grading standard. Although you may not be aware of this grading system, we as patient advocates monitor this closely.  https://www.hospitalsafetygrade.org

Do you know the grade of your local hospital?

The “Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade” is a hospital rating system focused primarily on hospital safety. This safety grade provides us with important information. For instance, how likely they are to experience accidents, injuries, errors, or harm while in the hospital.

As patient advocates, this is an important piece of information that we give our clients when they are choosing hospitals for care. Would this be important to you?

What Does the Leapfrog Group Measure?

It measures infection rates, including central line-associated bloodstream infections, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, surgical site infections for colon surgery, MRSA (methicillin-resistant staph aureus) infection, C. Diff (Clostridium Difficile, a colon bacterial infection), falls and trauma as well as very serious pressure ulcers.

Foreign objects, accidental punctures, and lacerations are all preventable and monitored complications.

It takes into consideration strong nursing leadership and engagement, computerized physician order entry systems to prevent medication errors, safe administration of medications, hand hygiene, and the competence of ICU (intensive care unit) staff. All of these subjects are very important to a positive patient outcome.

Whitley Patient Advocates can help you understand why these measures are important to your hospital stay and outcome.

Would you want to know this information for yourself or your loved ones? Are You At Risk?

A hospital admission could expose you to one or all of these measures.

Understanding these measures can be very overwhelming and take up a lot of your time to research. As patient advocates, we will be your guide in this overwhelming volume of information.
